Medicare Scam Alert Print E-mail
Monday, 20 October 2008 00:00

Several SMP programs in the national SMP Network have posted alerts about postcards from the National Processing Center being sent to seniors.

The card states in part:

IMPORTANT: NEW MEDICARE CHANGES

Proposed cuts to existing government programs include a significant reduction in the federal Medicare program resulting in an increase in premiums and fees that you must pay...and a decrease in some benefits.  Etc.
For more information about these changes .... Designed for limited income families...a plan is available to help pay any final expenses and debts that Social Security does not pay.

If the senior wants more information, they are asked to return the postage paid postcard with their name, age, phone number, and signature.  The mailing looks official with a Washington DC return address, though there is fine print that says their not associated with the federal gov't.

The US Postal Service believes this is an operation run by a group formerly known as American Senior Alliance.  They characterize the operation as a scam and at the very least for those seniors who return the card, it opens them up to phone calls for financial products they do not need or want and could be very harmful.  The Senior Journal has an article about the mailings, a link is below.
